たとえば半径 r 、角速度 ω の円運動をする質量 m の物体には向心力 mrω2 が働くが、中心で同じ角速度で回転している観測者から見れば物体は静止して見えるから、向心力のほかに逆向き等大の遠心力が働いて物体が釣合うとみなせる。
