船舶を設計、建造、修理する産業のこと。
古代から海洋交通の重要な手段であり、現代でも海上輸送に欠かせない存在だ。造船所では、船の設計図に基づいて、鉄板の切断、加工、溶接、組み立てを行い、船体を建造する。その後、エンジンや電気設備などの艤装を行い、最後に試運転をして完成となる。
